Caring For the Feet You Depend On

A neuroma is essentially a pinched or damaged nerve in the foot.  Neuromas are most commonly located under the ball of the foot between the 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th toes.  When the neuroma is located between the 2nd and 3rd toes, it may also be referred to as a Morton's neuroma.

Symptoms may include sharp pain when walking and pushing off the ball of the foot, tingling in the toes, and numbness in the toes.

Wearing well cushioned shoes can be helpful in reducing symptoms and preventing further nerve damage.

Treatment includes x-ray examination, cortisone injections (one or up to 3 if needed), sclerosing injections to deaden the nerve if cortisone injections are ineffective, and surgery as a last resort.  Non surgical treatment is most often effective in resolving this condition.  Early treatment greatly reduces the chances that surgery will be needed.
